North Narrabeen Boardriders have won the 2024 SURFTAG SERIES with their Women’s team stealing victory from Bungan Boardriders in the closing stages of the Women’s Final. The North Narrabeen team of Ell Northey (9.23), Belinda Hardwick (8.67), Ruby Trew (10.43), Kyla Whitfield (12.17) & Sienna Hinwood (5.67) finished with a total of 50.17 just ahead of Bungan (49.95) with Long Reef (31.20) finishing in third position and Queenscliff (24.13) fourth.
Bungan got off to a flying start with their first surfer Lucy Brown posting the highest score of the final – 16.20 with the stylish natural footer also scoring the highest Powerwave of the event – 8.83 in the Semi Finals.
North Narrabeen’s experience kept them in the title hunt with fourth surfer Kyla Whitfield locking in a 4.17 & 4.00 Powerwave late in the final and when fifth surfer Sienna Hinwood was awarded a 2.50 on her Powerwave and 4 Bonus Points for finishing back on the beach first the North Narrabeen Women’s team had done just enough to secure their 9th Women’s SURFTAG Title winning by 0.22.
In the Masters SURFTAG North Steyne Boardriders led by Beau Mitchell and Dayyan Neve won their second Division of the 2024 SURFTAG Series after winning the Men’s Division last month at Queenscliff Beach. Both Mitchell (18.74) and Neve (23.09) wound back the clock to put North Steyne in a commanding position early in the four team Final with Mitchell’s brother James (3.34), Eddie Mattei (6.73) and Tristan McCaffrey (9.63) adding to the team total with the Manly based club finishing with a total of 65.53, 9.97 points clear of second place Long Reef – 55.56. Wollongong’s Scarborough Boardriders (51.48) finished third with Cronulla Sharks Boardriders (46.16) fourth.
Former CT surfer Neve said he was stoked to have Bo Middy back in the team, “The boys cleaned up today it was such a good event we had such a strong team and having Bo Middy back the strongest starter in Surftag history, are you kidding me he got the whole team fired up it was the sickest day we were frothing”. Neve won the Creatures of Leisure Highest Score in the Final (23.09) that included a 9.23 on his opening wave, “mate that thing was a dream boat it just came to me, and it was just saying hit me hit me, hahahaha yeh sweet bull”.
In the overall SURFTAG SERIES rankings both North Narrabeen and Queenscliff lost in Semi Final 2 at the Masters SURFTAG with Queenscliff missing out on a finals berth by 2.87. In a tense Semi Final Queenscliff (46.73) and North Narrabeen (45.44) finished behind North Steyne (54.52) and Cronulla (49.60) with Queenscliff sitting in second position late in the fifty-minute semi but ended up finishing third due to a 2.10 Powerwave by Cronulla’s Andrew McKenzie.
North Narrabeen (3895) finished 225 points clear of Queenscliff (3670) to win the series with 2 x SURFTAG SERIES Champions Long Reef finishing in third position. North Narrabeen’s Coach Matt Cattle thanked all the surfers that competed over the series for North Narrabeen, “It has been a great series and thanks to all our surfers that represented the club we are stoked to win the Surftag Series,” Cattle said. “Our Women’s and Grommets teams won, and the competition has been really strong across all divisions”.
